To supplement, or not to supplement…
I’ve heard a lot of pros and cons, debates and arguments about supplementation, vitamin sources, synthetic vitamins, and what-have-you.
Personally, my diet is already so healthy that I only worry about vitamin D–which I can get naturally by spending time outdoors, at least when it’s not winter–and B12. Since many people are B12 deficient, it’s a concern for everyone regardless of your diet. Ordinarily it’s a bacteria that is produced by the soil, but in areas where the soil is nutrient-poor, you’re not getting enough.
Then there are the arguments over how much protein is too little or too much. I frankly don’t worry about that, either. Most people are already getting far too much, and that can cause health problems.
So when do you supplement? To be on the safe side? With certain vitamins and minerals you may be missing out on due to food intolerances/allergies or other concerns? Or is all supplement bad?
I like to avoid as much processed food as possible as none of it has been proven to be good for you, but I’m still on the fence as to how good or bad supplementation is.
