Getting fit the fun way in the summertime

I was invited to participate in Raise.com’s “Summer Fit” campaign. Summer is honestly my favorite season. I love the sun, the heat, and the opportunity to visit my favorite beaches.

I spend a good chunk of time outdoors in the summer. I love going out for morning runs, long walks into Cambridge and downtown Boston, and spending time walking along the beach.

One of the places I like to visit in the summer is Hampton Beach. The trick is to get there early enough to be able to get a parking spot. Once that’s secured, I spend much of the day walking along the beach and on the boardwalk:

I try to soak up as much vitamin D as possible–given plenty of spray on SPF 100, of course–before the winter months hit New England.

Here are my list of summer must-dos and haves:

  1. Sunblock! I am a fair skinned, freckled redhead. I forget sunblock and I burn VERY badly, very quickly.
  2. Water! You should be drinking at least half of your body weight in ounces of water daily, and in hot weather and exercise this needs to be upped.
  3. Electrolytes! Following the above, getting your electrolytes in is a good idea. You can buy special water for that or additives to put in your water.
  4. Getting outside! I go for walks during my lunch breaks at work; it gets me out of my chair and active besides.
  5. Morning runs! Better than caffeine and there’s just something about being outside in summer mornings which is so refreshing.
  6. Long walks! I hit the farmer’s markets, stores, window browse, beaches, you name it.
  7. Good footwear! Wearing the appropriate footwear for either walking or running is crucial.
  8. Fresh fruit and veggies! Take advantage of the the summer season and hit up your local farmer’s market for good, fresh produce which is good for you.
  9. Playlists! I take my iPod Touch wherever I go and have some great playlists to keep my energy level up.

Warmer weather means YUMMY SHAKES! Plus, a sale on Shakeology packets….

I just love it when the warmer weather hits! I get to run outdoors again without it aggravating my asthma, walk outside, wake up earlier and feel soooo refreshed!

It’s also when I like to break out the tropical strawberry Shakeology for breakfast instead of my usual chocolate vegan, and mix that with some tasty fresh organic OJ and a banana in my blender. omnomnom 🙂 That’s hands down my favorite recipe for tropical strawberry Shakeology.

After the Avon Walk comes the workouts

I just finished up the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer last weekend! I did the full 39.3 miles over the course of two days. While it’s a wonderful cause and I enjoy doing it every year (this year was my fifth), the training for it is VERY time consuming and tedious. Walking can be a great calorie burn but it’s sooooo loooooonggggg. It leaves next to no other time for anything else. I miss my running, my lifting…my everything, really!

This week I restarted phase 1 of P90x3 AGAIN…I’ve been taken out of it three times already: once to train for the half marathon I ran in February (especially when I got posterior tibial tendonitis–ouch!), a second time when I fell and sprained my wrist, and then the third when I had to train for the Avon Walk. So to keep me on track AND not to get bored, I’ve been tacking on other workouts such as Les Mills Pump and a brand new one I’m giving a try, Body Beast! I am also running about 3-4 days a week in addition to other forms of cardio. The key is to get me to recovery week and phase two of P90X3 and follow that schedule more closely than I am for my umpteenth time doing phase 1 of P90X3.

Body Beast Build Chest & Tris is NO easy task. I am still sore in my pecs from the workout! Les Mills Pump is also a ton of fun and is helping to strengthen me to better tackle Body Beast. The rest is P90X3 Total Synergistics, X3 Yoga, etc.

I plan to blog more often about what I’m doing and how I’m handling the workouts, as I miss checking in and babbling about it. 🙂 I also plan to review all of the programs and let people know what I think about each of the workouts.

I’ve gone insane…

I’ve been creating and working with a hybrid schedule of P90X2 and Insanity with some doses of Brazil Butt Lift and running thrown in for good measure. I’m in training for a 5K at the end of the month then have a 10K in September, so every bit helps!

Here’s a sample of what I’m doing for the next few weeks:

Monday: X2 Balance & Power
Tuesday: Either Plyometric Cardio Circuit or Pure Cardio from Insanity (alternating weeks)
Wednesday: Brazil Butt Lift’s High and Tight, and Insanity’s Cardio Abs
Thursday: X2 Recovery & Mobility
Friday: X2 Plyocide
Saturday: X2 Yoga
Sunday: Insanity’s Cardio Recovery and Max Recovery

Plus…I’ll be tacking on running when I can. 🙂
